The Horseback Specialty Program is definitely for the true horse enthusiast. YWCO Horseback Camp is a fun, learning environment for intermediate and advanced riders who have mastered at least the skills of turning both ways, halting, walking, trotting and cantering. Rich in tradition, horseback is one of our most popular activities on camp!
Campers will spend a minimum of five hours per day at the stables. The day begins with catching and feeding and ends with grooming, feeding and turning them back out. In between, horseback campers receive excellent instruction from our Horseback Director and staff to improve their riding and jumping skills, go on trail rides, have an overnight riding campout, and learn care of horses and tack. This program is considered a "working camp" where campers are assigned 1-2 horses they are responsible for taking care of. This includes feeding, grooming, and yes, mucking the stalls! These campers are housed together, but they eat meals, have rest period, store, free swim, and participate in evening program with the rest of camp. These campers spend the most time together by far; therefore they form very strong bonds with each other, their counselors – and of course the horses! To top off their stay, riders perform during a horse show on closing day for their parents, showing off new skills and talents they have learned at camp.
