Our Counselor-In-Training Program (CIT) is a 2-year process. This program provides the opportunity for young women, who have completed their first year of high school, to participate in a month-long seminar program involving development of leadership, programming, teaching, health and safety, and outdoor skills.
First-year CITs live in a separate building with the CIT Director. Much of their time is spent learning about the experiences of camp counselors, and how do deal with camp-related issues. These girls also have duties like leading songs, helping with the dishes, and helping tuck campers in. The hands-on activities, opportunities to help in the cabin and lead evening program, and growth in confidence and self esteem, support the culmination of this two-part program.
Second-year CITs live in the cabins with campers and counselors. They are treated very much like staff, and have some staff privileges like spending time in the staff lounge. These girls meet on a daily basis with the CIT Director to discuss their experiences in the cabins, activities, and everyday camp life. Upon completion of the CIT Program, these graduates are eligible to become a counselor. Many of our summer staff have completed this program, returning to camp year after year.
Graduates of the CIT program, upon becoming counselors, provide staff strength and continuity to the program. Because of their unique contributions, first year CITs pay about half of the regular camper fee and there are no fees for second year CITs.
